Do you place amalgam fillings?
Dr. Cloud has not used metal fillings since 1988. We have found that tooth-colored fillings are just as durable, look better, and help preserve more of your healthy tooth structure than amalgam.
Amalgam has been widely used for fillings for many years, and it served its purpose because it was the best we had at the time. However, there has been a lot of debate about the safety of metal fillings containing mercury. While there has been no proof that amalgam fillings are dangerous, we choose to use tooth-colored fillings because of the advantages they offer.
Tooth-colored fillings can be made to match the color of your existing teeth, so they are more aesthetically pleasing than metal fillings that can darken over time. Amalgam fillings also have a tendency to shrink after years of use.
Composite fillings expand and contract when they come into contact with hot or cold foods. This prevents the fracturing that can occur with amalgam, making tooth-colored fillings much more effective at keeping your tooth strong and healthy.
Another advantage of tooth-colored fillings is that we can preserve more of your tooth structure because we only need to remove the decayed portion to properly fill your tooth. Our goal is to keep your natural teeth strong and healthy for as long as possible, and composite fillings help us accomplish this.
